How Big Should My Coop Be?

More space is usually easier than fixing crowding later.

  • A common planning baseline is about 4 sq ft per bird inside and 10 sq ft per bird outside.
  • Bigger is better when you can swing it, especially in wet or muddy seasons.
  • Plan ventilation without drafts, dry bedding, roosts, nest boxes, and access for cleaning.
  • Predator-proofing matters more than cute design.
  • Build for the flock you can manage, not the flock you dream about someday.
